Houston Goes All Out for the Fourth — And This Year Is Unlike Any Other
Freedom Over Texas returns for its 39th year with a star-studded lineup, a World Cup twist, and America's biggest birthday yet.
Every city celebrates the Fourth of July. But Houston? Houston throws a party.
For 39 years running, Freedom Over Texas has been the Bayou City's signature way of honoring Independence Day — loud, live, and lit up along Buffalo Bayou. This year, with America marking its 250th birthday and the FIFA World Cup wrapping up its final Houston match on the very same day, Freedom Over Texas 2026 isn't just bigger. It's genuinely historic.
"Freedom Over Texas is one of Houston's most exciting traditions, and this year, we're making it bigger and better," said Mayor John Whitmire at the official announcement. "As we mark America's 250th anniversary, this event is more than a celebration. It is a reflection of the spirit, unity, and pride that define our community."
Put simply: July 4, 2026 is a day Houston will be talking about for a long time.

The Lineup: Country, Rock & Pure Texas
The Freedom Stage this year is stacked. The Freedom Stage will showcase Los Lonely Boys to kick off the night, followed by Collective Soul opening for headliner Keith Urban.
Let's talk about who these artists are, because this lineup deserves a proper introduction:
Keith Urban is one of the most celebrated artists in country music today. With four GRAMMY Awards, 13 CMAs, and more than 11 billion global streams, Urban is known for high-energy, genre-blending performances and chart-topping hits like "Blue Ain't Your Color," "Somebody Like You," and "Wasted Time." His live shows are widely regarded as some of the most dynamic in the industry. He's no stranger to Houston either — Urban has performed multiple times at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, with his last stint on the star-shaped stage occurring in 2022.
Collective Soul brings the rock. The multi-platinum rock band behind iconic hits like "Shine," "December," and "The World I Know" will deliver a high-energy, nostalgic performance to the main stage.
Los Lonely Boys rounds out the night with pure Texas soul. The Grammy Award-winning Texas trio is known for their signature "Texican rock & roll" sound. With their breakout hit "Heaven" and more than two decades of music, the band continues to captivate audiences with a blend of rock, soul, and roots influences.
Three acts. Seven hours. One unforgettable evening.
Everything Happening at the Park
From 3 PM to 10 PM, this extraordinary, fun-filled celebration highlights the traditions of Independence Day, as well as honoring the nation's 250-year anniversary. The festivities stretch across both Eleanor Tinsley Park and Sam Houston Park, with something for every kind of Houstonian.
For friends, families, and fans in town for soccer, there is something for everyone to enjoy, including Fútbol Park, Liberty Park, the Kids Zone, Budweiser Zone, and Dr. Pepper's Flavor Zone.
Here's the breakdown:
Bud Zone— Budweiser's tropical beer garden, toasting Texas for its 39th year as founding sponsor, with a prime view of the main stage and fireworks finale.
Dr Pepper Flavor Zone— Cool off in the shade with a Dr Pepper float and sample tastings at the Dr Pepper Parlor. Live music plays here throughout the event too.
Kids Zone— A dedicated space for the little ones, packed with family-friendly activities.
Fútbol Park (Sam Houston Park)— New this year, Freedom Over Texas introduces Fútbol Park — a dedicated space celebrating the global excitement of soccer. Located in Sam Houston Park, fans of all ages can enjoy soccer-themed games and activities, food vendors, photo moments, and plenty of seating and large outdoor screens — all tying in to the World Cup Round of 16 match happening that same day at Houston Stadium.
Liberty Park— A tribute to members of the American armed forces, honoring those who made this celebration possible.
And capping the entire evening? Now celebrating its 39th year, Freedom Over Texas delivers a spectacular, Texas-sized fireworks finale choreographed to music — lighting up the Buffalo Bayou sky in a way only Houston can.

The Free Option: Star-Spangled Salute at Miller Outdoor Theatre
Can't make it to Eleanor Tinsley Park — or just want two celebrations in one day? Head to Hermann Park. Miller Outdoor Theatre welcomes back the Houston Symphony for their annual Star-Spangled Salute on the stage in the heart of Hermann Park. The program features patriotic fan-favorites like the "1812 Overture," "The Stars and Stripes Forever," and "America the Beautiful," followed by a grand finale that lights up the night sky with a firework display.
All seats at Miller are free, but covered seating for popular evening shows usually requires a free assigned ticket reserved 24 hours in advance. Tickets for covered seating go live the morning of July 3rd, so set a reminder.
Tickets, Timing & Getting There
General admission tickets are $15, and children 12 and under get in free. Tickets are available online and at the gates — visit freedomovertexas.org to purchase ahead of time. ABC13 is the exclusive television partner of Freedom Over Texas and will broadcast the event live — so if the heat becomes too much, you can also catch it from home.
For getting there, the city strongly recommends using METRO. Event parking is available for a fee at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts parking garage at 800 Bagby Street, and in the Theater District Parking Garages with access on Rusk between Bagby and Smith Streets. But on a day when a World Cup match is also wrapping up downtown, transit is your smartest bet.
One last thing to keep in mind: expect street closures to begin as early as June 26 through July 5. Plan your route ahead and give yourself extra time.
Houston has been celebrating Independence Day for 39 years. This one — with a Grammy-winning headliner, a World Cup finale, America's 250th birthday, and a Texas sky full of fireworks — might just be the best one yet.
